OUR HISTORY
In 1971, O’Connors & Bourque and The Stag Shop amalgamated and became known simply as “O’Connors”. Under Graham’s enthusiastic and optimistic leadership, O’Connors successfully expanded through the economic turbulence of the 1970s and 80s, adding both a men’s shoe store and “Lady O’Connor”, an upscale establishment featuring women’s designer collections.
O’Connors, the store and the family, have strong roots in Calgary. In 1958 Graham’s father, Ed, and business partner Phil Bourque opened the menswear store O’Connors & Bourque.Ed was a successful entrepreneur, already owning STARS Ambulance and Clinic Pharmacy.Graham went to work for the clothing store, and was soon managing a new, second location. In 1961, Graham opened his own store, The Stag Shop, featuring clothing designed for “the button-down professional young man”!
Always keen to bring cutting edge fashion and new trends to Calgary, through the 1970s Graham also owned and operated “The Pant Pocket” – the first designer jeans store in Alberta.
A multi-generational family enterprise, Graham still runs the store with his son, Myles. Graham is a Lifetime Director of the Calgary Stampede and Myles played professional hockey for ten years, four of which were spent in the NHL.
In 2002 O’Connors commissioned a custom built freestanding store in the vibrant and growing community of Victoria Crossing. At over 12 000 square feet, O’Connors is one of the largest independent retailers in Canada.
Fall 2007 saw O’Connors grow again. The Women’s store moved across the street to a new, larger space. Menswear expanded, and launched the ANNEX – an exciting new concept in hot designer fashion.
We look forward to your visit!
